In 2011 a guest editorial in this Journal outlined the proposed activity of a joint
taskforce of the Department of Health in England's Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial
Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) and the Healthcare Infection
Society.

This taskforce aimed to develop a standard methodology for the laboratory testing
of disinfectants which claim to have activity against Clostridium difficile spores. Secondary aims were to develop a network of laboratories with the technical
expertise to perform these tests and to develop an external quality assurance (QA)
